Jockeys Irving Moncada and Emmanuel Giles were taken to a Louisville, Ky., hospital following a spill in Thursday’s second race at Churchill Downs.
According to published reports, Moncada was unconscious for a period of time following the spill and underwent a series of scans at the University of Lousville Hospital. He was later released, the Courier-Journal reported. X-rays and scans were performed on Giles, according to the reports, after he complained of pain in his shoulder and spine. Results of those diagnostics were not available.
Moncada was aboard Territoriality while racing near the lead on the turn for home in the 1 1/16-mile race on the main track for $20,000 maiden claiming fillies and mares. Another horse, Valerie Blue, ridden by Martin Chuan, made a bid in tight quarters between horses when Territorially to her outside clipped heels of another runner and fell at the five-sixteenths pole. Vostra, with Giles aboard, tried to avoid the fallen horse and lost her rider.
Reports said neither horse suffered a serious injury.
Valerie Blue, who finished fifth, was disqualified by the stewards and placed last.
